Description

The introduction of sociocracy into schools is in some ways a continuation of the democratic school movement, in which challenging the concept of a compulsory curriculum has always been a central facet. As soon as you propose that the pupils themselves should be a part of decision-making at their school, you realize how much of the decisions are actually not actively seen as decisions even by the teachers or principal. But for today when the world is changing at an accelerating pace, we cannot avoid the central question of the curriculum when designing our schools: Is it even beneficial to define for each school and for each pupil what they should learn?

I believe the question can be answered in two ways, each complementing the other and together showing the way towards schools with a radically different definition of what a curriculum is and with a much clearer view on what the purpose of schools, education and pedagogy is at all.
