Dearest members,

I hope you are well!

How are you holding up in your balance between activity, rest, hope, and acceptance? I’ve been thinking a lot about that — and yet, so often, I come back to the same conclusion: I hold on to my conviction that people overall are well-intended and that we all get up in the morning trying to do something good. All the rest is systemic issues and coordination failures — and those we can address by having better governance. So let’s shake the dust off our pants and continue working towards better governance methods for the planet.

A side comment. I am curious to learn what IT tools you use to support your use of sociocracy. I mean tools like circle/role visualization, minutes, team communication, and so on. I made a list of tools here — add yours (with your name)! Thank you!

Power to the Children Childrens Parliaments Webinar - - Sociocracy For All

Come watch the documentary “Power to the Children’ with us. This film offers a deep insight into the lives of children who are part of the Children’s Parliaments in India. The Children’s Parliaments are a huge and successful effort to help people solve serious problems in their communities – with 100,000s of children involved worldwide. Swarnalakshmi Ravi, the former national prime minister of India’s Children’s Parliament who is featured in the film, will join us for a Q&A. Additionally, two youth members of the Provisional World Children’s Parliament will attend and contribute to the Q&A from a youth perspective.

Circle reports

Mission Circle

  • Mission Circle has approved the Conflict Engagement Policy, and the linking members brought the policy to General Circle for additional questions and reactions.  In General Circle, the members took time to walk through the steps of the protocol for addressing conflict; they brought up some questions but were largely happy with the current state of the policy.  They decided to prioritize publishing the policy to the Policy Manual on the forum, where we can foster additional discussion around the policy.

General Circle

  • General Circle learned more about the facilitation prompt cards that are being developed in Content Circle; the members are excited about them and had many ideas for additional work to do around them, and they agreed to spend $2800 to produce an initial run of 500 packs of the cards, which will hopefully be sold for a profit.
  • As mentioned above, the members looked closely at the Conflict Engagement Policy and looked carefully at their backlog, where they could see that there are important conversations pending around understanding department domains and having effective communication between SoPra and the rest of SoFA.

Content Circle

  • Content Circle is exploring where the domain for marketing strategy should live within SoFA, and they have created a helping circle to bring in different perspectives from various circles with respect to marketing strategy.  This conversation will continue to develop on the forum.
  • The members of this circle also discussed language justice, particularly with respect to developing strategies for localization.

Ecosystem Circle

  • Ecosystem Circle provided feedback on the new landing page, particularly focusing on how it organizes and represents the sectors.  In general, the members are wanting more shared understanding of how people interacting with SoFA may understand and connect with sectors that are meaningful for them.
  • The circle members also approved their next quarterly budget and selected Rhonda into the role of Partnership Coordinator.

Membership Circle

  • Membership Circle is working to better understand its aims and domains, spurred partly from below and partly from above.  A previous General Circle meeting prompted a review of circle structures, and Finance Circle (located within the Membership department) has reorganized into Financial Wellbeing Circle, so Membership Circle is thinking about how to understand its role within SoFA.
  • The members of this circle also decided to develop a report on the membership survey held earlier this year and to develop a plan for another round of the survey next year.

International Circle

  • Members of this circle have been discussing how to bridge the gap between SoPra and the rest of SoFA, particularly around finances.  One possibility would be to have an additional delegate to General Circle.
  • A new SoFA Romania circle is in development, and this department will evaluate new Swedish and Danish language circles at their next meeting.
