Giving Youth the Tools to Build a Better Future

Description

Sociocracy 3.0 (S3) provides an extensive collection of tried and tested practices, processes and guidelines that have evolved through collaborative endeavours and prevailed because of their usefulness over time. S3 patterns draw not only from Gerard Endenburg’s Sociocratic Circle Method, but from various Agile and Lean inspired methods and frameworks as well. These patterns are being used by tens of thousands of people in organizations around the world to help them collaborate effectively and handle their daily work. However, one of the biggest impediments adults face to using S3 patterns effectively is the challenge of unlearning old ways of working. Even when habitual behaviours lead to negative consequences, it’s often difficult to get out of our own way and try something new. Old habits die hard, precisely because they reflect behaviours from the past that helped us to deal with the challenges we faced. That’s why under pressure we tend to fall back even more strongly on our habitual ways of doing things, even when those behaviours now lead to consequences they originally helped us avoid. Children and young people are super open to developing effective ways of working. With the right example and support, we can help them to develop a repertoire of effective options for navigating the world of organization, collaboration and work. The simplest way to do so is to make good practices a part of their daily experience from the start. In this presentation James will introduce a number of Sociocracy 3.0 patterns along with practical ideas on how to introduce them to children and young people during the course of their daily lives and work. This talk is useful for educators, youth workers and parents alike, and for anyone interested in helping today’s children learn how to collaborate effectively and navigate the complexities of tomorrow’s world of work.
