Hey there! I recently traveled to Switzerland, connecting with people who are into self-management. I was also a spokesperson for (classic) sociocracy at an event that also hosted Holacracy and Sociocracy 3.0.

Basel conference
Self-management conference in Switzerland

It was fabulous to connect and hear what others are learning — and to see how much sociocracy is already happening in very unexpected places and how much SoFA is known in the movement all over.

It also triggered many thoughts in me, and I want to share a bit about that with SoFA folks. Many of you might not be aware of the “politics” around the different players in SCM (sociocratic circle method — that’s what we do — and Sociocracy 3.0 and Holacracy). Honestly, this conference also shifted those politics a bit in an interesting and appealing way.

I’d be curious to hear how others relate to my thinking on it. More context is certainly useful for all of us! I’ll be doing a sharing for SoFA members on Thursday, December 15 — please see the details here.

Another celebration I want to share is that Hope Wilder’s article on her story of sociocracy with children was published in a peer-reviewed journal. It’s publicly accessible, so go ahead and read it and share it! Congrats, Hope!

Peer Fundraising Messages

We’re raising money to support Sociocracy For All, and members are the best possible ambassadors of our fundraising efforts. Why? Because people donate to support people. Because you see first-hand how fundraising is a key part of making the “For All” part of “Sociocracy for All’s” name true. Because you know the joy of giving time, energy, and/or resources to Sociocracy for All and therefore understand that when you’re asking people to donate, you’re giving them an opportunity to experience joy as well.

So, please spread the word! People who spread the word and/or donate this week will receive a new booklet that prepares leaders, facilitators, secretaries, and delegates for their roles. You can share it with them when they get selected and help things run smoothly!

Start with our Peer Fundraising Messages and go from there.

Circle reports

Mission Circle

The members of this circle discussed how to engage more with operational work through delegation.  They also expressed their desire to have a closer connection with work in General Circle and consented to the conflict engagement policy!

General Circle

The most recent General Circle meeting (earlier today, as I write this) was a whirlwind!  The circle members discovered and worked to navigate a conflict around how we coordinate the various international legal entities that are separate from SoFA (such as Sociocracia Práctica) for financial reasons.  We need to find a place to discuss the details and ensure that voices from International Circle beyond SoPra are heard.  Several key members will meet (not quite as a helping circle) to develop a plan.

The members of this circle also looked at the budget in detail.  A major goal is to allocate funding to places that will best provide energy for our work.  The circle members also want to remind everyone to encourage people to sign up for Academy and offer supporting donations if they can!

Content Circle

Some highlights from this department include the workaround strengthening (in Organizational Support Circle) the workflow for connecting with Organizational Learners, which has helped provide ease for connecting with several organizations recently.

There is an Otto Scharmer webinar happening next week.  Also, work on SoFA’s main webpage redesign is almost complete, and translations of “Many Voices One Song” into French, German, Italian, and Turkish are on track to be published in 2023!

Ecosystem Circle

The members of Ecosystem Circle celebrated their accomplishments for the year, including how the circle has developed structures to help guide sector circles.  They also took some time to listen to the needs of Activists Circle and offer support and suggestions.  Activism can mean so much to so many of us, and both parent and child circles want to understand that better.  The members of Ecosystem Circle also touched again on a desire to find a place to talk with each other around our individual financial needs.

Membership Circle

The members of this circle are continuing to work on reorganizing the circle to better fit with the work they do in SoFA and also to foster better clarity for the work of their sub-circles.  They also discussed how to approach the element of engagement within the membership framework. They decided to measure engagement using the existing OKR and evaluate that engagement within the top-level circle in March.

International Circle

The department growing from International Circle is also undergoing significant restructuring to better support the development of its many sub-circles.  Those sub-circles are doing a tremendous amount of work developing content and training programs in their own languages.  Many new language circles have formed recently, and International Circle has seen a lot of new members.  As we can see from the conflict that came up in General Circle, the members of International Circle are thinking intensely about how to organize their financial situation, and they are trying to bring in more revenue to help balance out their expenses.
