Hey there!

Training Circle is inviting all SoFA members to join one of the Advanced Facilitation classes for free. The coupon code is YaySoFA2022.

The class is all scenario work — we break into small groups and go through facilitation role play after role play. And if you have already done the class, here’s the even better news: it’s going to be new scenarios!

We are lucky to have an intern in SoFA now for the next few months. Julien Gaillard is interested in internal and external communications and needs this internship for his college degree. He will both support and study how communication works in SoFA. Welcome him if you meet him!

I am also sharing a celebration! Seba Zulueta and Abbie Kempson have both been certified as sociocracy consultants by International Sociocracy Certification Board recently! Yay them!

General Circle is taking some time off so it’s going to be quiet for a bit. Be well!

SoFA membership for organizations

The Intentional Communities circle is excited to announce that we now have 16 organizational member (OM) communities, listed below!

This membership was initiated by a request from some communities to have all their members be SoFA members to attend the IC community of practice (CoP). This new kind of membership was created in spring 2021, including way more than access to the CoP, like discounts on pretty much everything SoFA offers.

From all sectors, we now have 27 organizations that have joined SoFA. Here are our member Intentional Communities:

Adams Creek Cohousing
Altair Ecovillage
Atlan Center
Blueberry Commons Farm Cooperative
Bridport Cohousing
Cohousing Hamilton
Columbia Ecovillage
Common Ground Ecovillage
Green Grove
Kawartha Commons
Lookout Arts Quarry
Prairie Hill Cohousing
Rachel Carson Ecovillage
The Coastal Village
Treehouse Village
Westwood Cohousing

Circle reports

General Circle

  • Our General Circle meeting this week was intense, particularly as we engaged with objections that Mission Circle raised around the Language Equity Statement! Do we acknowledge that as members we have a need to challenge English as the dominant language of our organization?  How much energy can we afford to expend on Language Equity goals? And what’s the relationship between the Language Equity Helping Circle, Mission Circle, and General Circle in terms of discussing the statement and deciding on it as SoFA policy?  We held space for some valuable fishbowl-style conflict engagement around this, which stirred up many useful reactions from the circle members. We offered our comments to our linking members in Mission Circle as they continue their deliberation.
  • In addition to that, we also gave our consent to the updated IT Circle policy that requests that secretaries tag @[email protected] or edit the policy manual when their circles have new or updated policies.

Content Circle

  • The members of Content Circle consented to the SoFA Voice statement, and are providing their own feedback on the Language Equity Statement.
  • Circles within the Content Circle department are actively working on a lot of their respective content, including gearing up for end-of-the-year fundraising, a new strategy for doing outreach with email, more social media testing, and successful new training modules.

Ecosystem Circle

  • The members of Intentional Communities Sector Circle are working on a Sociocracy in Communities Conference, and they have organized a “community weavers” meeting to bring together several large organizations that are doing work in the space of intentional communities.

Membership Circle

  • The members of this circle are exploring the ways that the circle leader role can support membership goals of engaging all SoFA members in meaningful work.
  • IT Circle members are continuing to work on updating the member dashboard on the website, and they are exploring the possibility of a new system for interacting with our organizational diagram.
