Sociocracy as a Tool for Shifting Cultural Norms

Description

I work in a small prairie city focusing on community development with culture as the foundation of sustainable change, building trusting, empathetic relationships that focus on respect, reciprocity, relevance, and responsibility; the 4Rs of Indigenous inter-cultural communication. Sociocracy has provided a structure for organizing, engaging and empowering the community to challenge cultural norms and seek change beginning with the people. Are you READI to shift cultural norms?

Deirdre Ashenhurst - - Sociocracy For All

Deirdre Ashenhurst. There are so many aspects that make a human interesting, beyond the presentation at hand. I sculpt with bronze and clay, I ride my bike at ridiculous speeds (70km/h was the max last summer), I swim in wildly cold lakes, my dog thinks she’s my 60lb shawl, my teenagers still hug me, and ADHD makes my brain a beautiful kaleidoscope of ideas that all seem enticing at the same time.

Taking the time to understand the human experience, and how I can support progress towards equitable, accessible, and inclusive communities that celebrate the beauty of diversity has always been my passion; it became an actual career over 8 years ago.

I began working in the sphere of reconciliation, equity, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion (READI) when I was 14 years old, as an advocate for my mentally disabled bother. My master’s degree gave me the opportunity to understand the role of culture in sustainable development, interdisciplinary systems, and change management. Now I am incredibly lucky to work as a Diversity and Inclusion Facilitator, a position I see as a springboard to support community members who make the change happen.
