Sociocracy has many components, and yet children learn concepts such as consent and selections much more easily than adults. In this workshop, you’ll gain hands-on experience using sociocracy tailored specifically for younger children (ages 5-12.)

It is highly suggested that you purchase Let’s Decide Together to accompany the workshop. It is a workbook designed to take children step by step through sociocratic processes along with an adult.

The workshop is 4 hours over two 2-hour sessions, and the last hour of the workshop is tailored to meet participants’ needs.

Oct. 22- Session One Topics

• Brief introduction to sociocracy
• Tips for meetings with children ages 5-12
• Consent decision-making
• Hands-on practice: simple selections process using consent
• Children’s domains and aims
• Complex proposals and feedback

Oct. 29- Session Two Topics

• Change-Up meeting for problem-solving and simple proposals
• Breakout groups: Change-Up meeting practice
• Q&A
• Possible additional topics may include:
  • Conflict resolution using restorative practices and sociocracy
  • Circle structures
  • Role selections and roles for children

Hope Wilder

Hope Wilder is the author of the book “Let’s Decide Together: Practicing sociocracy with children” and certified sociocracy facilitator. She founded the Pathfinder Community School using sociocracy with ages 5-14 (closed 2020.)
Hope is the Youth and Education Program Manager at SoFA and has written several articles on the SoFA webpage. Read them here. Her research paper, “Does Sociocracy Support Student Voice?” will be published in the upcoming November 2022 issue of the Holistic Education Review.
