Join us for our first Sociocracy in Nonprofits Mini conference –Navigating Change: Aligning Vision, Values and Structure – we’ll delve into the transformative power of Sociocracy (governance for equivalence via consent-based decision-making) in the nonprofit sector.
With a focus on aligning vision, values, and structure, this 5-hour event is a must-attend for anyone in the nonprofit sector, including staff, leadership, board members, funders, and even organizational volunteers.
Speaker Bios
Leonie Smith is a first-generation Canadian of Jamaican heritage. She is founder of The Thoughtful Workplace, a coaching, and consultancy practice that uses relational and skill-building approaches to coaching, training and systems development; People of Colour for Nonviolent Communication (POC4NVC), an international network for Black, Indigenous People of Colour (BIPOC) who are connected to principles of nonviolence; and Necessary Trouble Collective (NTC) a consultancy and training organisation dedicated to supporting movements, communities and activist groups find harmonious ways of being and working so that they can remain focused on their shared purpose.
She has over 20 years of experience in senior management positions in nonprofit organisations in communications, fundraising and human resources. Leonie is also a certified trainer in Nonviolent Communication, through the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) and certified Facilitator in Sociocracy, through Sociocracy for All (SoFA) who also consults with organisations looking for people-centred ways to structure their work.
Jerry Koch-Gonzalez is a founding resident of the 29-year-old Cherry Hill Cohousing community, a co-founder of Sociocracy For All, co-author of Many Voices One Song: Shared Power with Sociocracy, a certified trainer in Nonviolent Communication, and a certified consultant in sociocracy (egalitarian governance). Jerry has served as president of the Boards of United for A Fair Economy, Class Action, and the Institute for Community Economics, and presently serves on the Boards of the Institute for Peaceable Communities and Cherry Hill Cohousing. And when not working, Jerry likes to sing and swim (not at the same time).
Jason Schulist is Founder and Chief Flourishing Officer (CFO) of the Generative Local Community Institute (genlocal.org) whose mission is to create and foster patterns for generative local communities in a world that all people flourish to their full potential. He is also the Executive Director of the Fox Valley Data Exchange (www.FVDEX.org), a non-profit that shares publicly available and local data to support health care, public health, and foundations with their community improvement efforts.
Jason Schulist most recently was the Boldt Company’s Vice President of Operational Excellence. Jason has spent his 30+ year professional career in the construction, automotive, utility, and paper industries. He has shepherded three corporate lean transformations sustainably saving over $1B (year over year hard savings).
Jason received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University and two Masters’ degrees in Electrical Engineering and Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt.
Jason supports Imagine Fox Cities (https://imaginefoxcities.com/) and he co-founded CI-Squared (www.cisquared.org) – the largest continuous improvement volunteer corps in the nation. He has a passion for addressing thorny community problems and helping each person flourish into their unique potential.
Ted Rau is an advocate, trainer and consultant for self-governance. His main focus is sociocracy. After his PhD in linguistics and work in Academia, he co-founded the membership organization Sociocracy For All in 2016 which has since grown to 250 members with several international and topic-focused departments and action teams. Ted spends his days consulting with mission-driven organizations, teaching and deeply immersed in the work as a member within Sociocracy For All. Ted identifies as a transgender man; he has 5 children between 10 and 20. A German citizen, he has lived in Massachusetts since 2010. He is (co)-author of three books on self-governance, Many Voices One Song (2018), Who Decides Who Decides (2021), and Collective Power (2023) and working on a book on the interface between governance and wisdom.
